Ring Diagram Analysis for Convective Structures

Although the ring analysis is conceptually simpler, it is more difficult to automate, and is also computationally much more expensive. There was a strong feeling expressed that, like the ring analysis, the Hilbert-based procedure should be applied to real data. Then, if the results differed, we would know that at least one of the methods does not work, whereas if they agreed there would be only two distinct possibilities. Evidently, it will be more important, both for the ring analysis and for the Hilbert procedure, and also for time-distance procedures, to generate a realistic artificial data set to which all methods can be applied. Julien has plans to construct such a data set.
